Artist Profile: Sary of Voiceless Sticker Co.

Sary StickerName: Sary
Location: Madison, WI
How long have you been making stickers?
Not that long, actually. Probably since June of this year, 2014.
What inspired you to first start producing stickers?
I wanted a way to spread ideas about social issues without having to preach on social media. Stickers in public places are a peaceful way to get your point across — they can be easily ignored and are generally more beautiful than an angry Facebook post.
What role would you say stickers play within the greater scope of art?
Art is a spectrum, a really really huge spectrum. Stickers are awesome because they’re so versatile. They can go anywhere, they can spread ideas, inspire people, and irritate the cops all at the same time.
Materials:
I draw my designs in Photoshop and/or Illustrator, then print them onto this thick vinyl sticker paper, cover them with waterproof laminate sheets, and cut them up by hand. (more…)

Wheatpaste Artist COST Has Been Arrested By NYPD

COST Arrested by NYPDGraffiti legend COST was arrested by NYPD on Sunday Oct. 5

COST’s wheatpaste posters have achieved ubiquity in New York City for the second time since his last epic run in the mid 1990s with collaborator REVS.

The arrest has spawned somewhat of a media frenzy among New York City news outlets and graffiti related bloggers.

NYPD vows to continue to keep glue wielding creatives off of our streets.

My name Is Deighton (Dayton). I like to joke and say my alias is “The Good Lieutenant”, I also like to joke that another alias of mine is “The Bad Lieutenant”.
Location:

How long have you been making stickers?
I received my first order of custom made stickers in December of 2013
What inspired you to first start producing stickers?
My fascination with stickers goes way back so I will give you the short
form account. I can remember visiting my brother who was attending school at College of Charleston in 2001 and seeing these stickers everywhere about Andre the Giant. I continued to ask my brother what they meant and he would reply “nothing, it’s just a sticker”. I thought that was so cool but I “didn’t get it”. The mystery and artwork of these enigmatic stickers were hypnotizing. These stickers of course were the early works of Shepard Fairy, a Charleston native. Fast forward to December 2012 and I experienced a near-fatal incident which put me in the hospital. I felt different from that day on and especially in those first few months. I would experience what I would call “flashes of inspiration”. These “flashes” were strong and drew me towards art and fashion, hobbies in which I had never really been into before the incident.
gatherIpostWhat role would you say stickers play within the greater scope of art?
I feel that stickers are a relatively fast and inexpensive way for an artist to put there work out there to be viewed by others, to spark conversation. Stickers are a great way to put any kind of message out there though. Stickers get people’s attention. I give out a lot of stickers and no one has ever told me “No, I do not want a sticker” when asked. There are not many things that people always accept with a smile. A sticker can make someone smile and that is an art in and of itself. (more…)

I thought it was a creative way to advertise, but later on I realized it was more of an art form. Designing & creating stickers really caught my attention.

bettie page stickerWhat inspired you to first start producing stickers?
I have always been a fan of graffiti and street art. Especially walking around NYC, you would see stickers on almost every corner in all the Burroughs. When I went to NYC Comic Con this year, I had the opportunity to meet Kosbey and Abe Lincoln JR and we talked about the sticker culture. I also met Camden Noir that put together the book, “Label 228 : A Street Art Project”. A collection of 228’s from various artist from all over the world. Soon after the Comic Convention I wanted to see if I could make a few of my own stickers. I’m still getting the hang of it and experimenting with different mediums. I also get inspired just by finding other stickers out there and looking at what other artist are coming up with. (more…)
