Right in the middle of Houston, Texas.
How long have you been making stickers?
I’ve been making stickers for going on 4 years now.
What inspired you to first start producing stickers?
Honestly, it was to get a message out in High School. Someone can be told a particular thing, and that person can easily forget what was said in a few short minutes. Why not leave a mark? A message.
What role would you say stickers play within the greater scope of art?
Stickers are the next “Picasso”, in all honesty.
I started off like everyone else with 228’s and Prismacolor from my Art class. I then progressed to full sheet Avery labels and Brush Tip Prismacolors, which is what I use now.
What are some of your favorite places to put up slaps?
I love having that one spot where everyone will glimpse at it and know it’s there.
What is the longest one of your slaps has survived in the wild?
I still have one up on a stop sign from 2009. It’s on its last limbs, but it’s still riding.
Have you ever had any run-ins with the law due to your stickering?
Fortunately, I have not, although there have been some close encounters.
What other artists inspire you?
Jesus, I can make a list, man. For starters, the people that I look up to, and in no particular order: FELN, NVAZN, ISOR, JOSH?, ETORIOUS, SIMPLE33, OWEL.
Have you ever had a funny/unusual experience related to stickering that you would like to share?
Once when I was Downtown, a hobo who was obviously piss drunk told me “I was bringing life back to Houston.” He was a cool guy.
If you had to guess, how many stickers have you produced to date?
Gosh, from 2009 to now, easily over 400.
Some artists try to get as many ups as possible. Is stickering about quantity or quality for you?
I believe in both. Quantity for whenever you do go about getting up. Quality for the way people will look at your art, and think “Damn. This guy’s killing it.”
Do you collect and/or trade slaps with other artists?
Of course I collect. Not too big in the trading scene anymore, though.
Do you have a message that you are trying to convey with your slaps?
Be yourself, man. You’re the only you in the world. Leave a mark showing that you were there. Fuck what anyone else thinks.
I honestly can’t thank anyone who follows my work, and respects it enough. You all keep me doing what I do for a reason. Thank you.
What is the best way for people to follow your work?
On my Instagram @johnny_slaps
First and foremost, my Mother for “stealing” me my first 228’s in ’09. All of my followers who support what I do. Everyone in PMP, TSG, and the locals still running HSK. Isor, Feln, Nvazn, Arrex, Skam, Josh? and everyone else who sucked me into this vast universe. You all rock.
