Joseph Ovalle aka Socialfiend.
In Montebello, CA, close to LA.
How long have you been making stickers?
I’ve been making stickers for about a year now, surprisingly.
What inspired you to first start producing stickers?
A friend of mine who knows I draw told me about the free slaps, and I took it upon myself to start ordering them and I never looked back!
What role would you say stickers play within the greater scope of art?
The beautiful thing about these stickers is that you can do absolutely anything with them, they’re a free medium in which a great mind can create.
My medium of choice is the label 228 but I also draw on canvases and regular paper. For color I use Prismacolor markers, Deco paint markers and Amsterdam acrylics.
What are some of your favorite places to put up slaps?
Downtown LA for sure, but I’ll put slaps up anywhere!
What is the longest one of your slaps has survived in the wild?
Haven’t run into any old ones yet.
Have you ever had any run-ins with the law due to your stickering?
Not yet, but by the size of things I just might.
What other artists inspire you?
Robert Crumb, Salvador Dali, Francis Bacon to name a few.
Have you ever had a funny/unusual experience related to stickering that you would like to share?
I suppose the experience I’d like to share is the utter flashbacks of past work. I never seem to know the size of the image until it is finished, and I suppose this will lead to some extraordinarily large work in the future.
If you had to guess, how many stickers have you produced to date?
Hundreds probably, with more on the way!
Some artists try to get as many ups as possible. Is stickering about quantity or quality for you?
Oh the quality for sure! You can make as many slaps as you want but if they look like shit no one is gonna look out, it’s all about the perfect design to captivate the mind.
Do you collect and/or trade slaps with other artists?
Over the course of this year i have met tons of great artists, I’ve collected hundreds of stickers and have collaborated on a bunch of slaps.
What do you want people to take away from seeing one of your designs in the wild?
I want people to look past the atrocities presented and look deeper to find meaning, either that or at least trip out on what I’m drawing!
I’m a simple man who’s getting better, and am interested in working with artists. I wanna get involved and do something awesome. Also, if anyone is interested in hiring me for anything, let me know!
What is the best way for people to follow your work?
I wanna give a shoutout to the homie _srum_ for getting me into trading and armsofthepig for showing me a thing or two.
