Artist Profile: Hizzle

hizzle sticker Name:
I live about 45 minutes north of Philly… in Pennsylvania…. USA
How long have you been making stickers?
Over 2 years.
What inspired you to first start producing stickers?
When I first got into the Instagram art scene I just happened to comment on a sketch by one of the artists I  and he just offered to send the drawing to me. I didn’t even know it was a sticker at first. He explained the basics and I took it from there. I saw some of the other artists he was working with and I started branching off, seeing styles ranging all over the place from the RBC crew, to Invimonster, the awesomely unique comic style of Srum, my little homie moosler, aaaaalllllllllll the crews and the vinyl sticker junkies. Gotta give props to Nate Safford for that random act of inspiring kindness.hizzle_4
What role would you say stickers play within the greater scope of art?
I feel like stickers are an awesome promotional tool, especially with the trading scene the encircles them. You also get a glimpse into different artist’s styles when you trade, which I love. Everyone has got or has had something coated with stickers! Sticker books, tool boxes, musical gear, scrapbooks, diaries, refrigerators, cars, and so on. Stickers are also fun for some reason too.
I use sticker paper and 228 labels, surprisingly the 228s react fairly well for almost any kind of media, which surprised me when I first started using them.
I also use:
– Prisma, and Copic brush tip markers
– Black Sharpie of all sizes
– metallic and white gel pens
– set of graphite pencils
– set of Micron inking markers
– scissors!
hizzle_3What are some of your favorite places to put up slaps?
I like to put them newspaper dispensers (specifically) cause they’re out there and it seems like the slaps don’t get damaged as often and of course the spot where me and some homies chill!!
What is the longest one of your slaps has survived in the wild?
I got one up in the corner of a college bathroom for about 8 months and running.
Have you ever had any run-ins with the law due to your stickering?
hizzle_7What other artists inspire you? (not necessarily sticker artists)
I’ve always loved H.R. Giger and Punisher comics since I was about 11. I also like Alex Ross, Brendan McCarthy, Frazetta, Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo. Although in my art I don’t really try to imitate any of their styles. Just enjoy looking at their pieces! Also music inspires me to draw.
Have you ever had a funny/unusual experience related to stickering that you would like to share?
BBW wanted me to draw her nude. I politely declined.
If you had to guess, how many stickers have you produced to date?
I’ve currently done about 1000-1200 hand-drawns in the past 2 years.
hizzle1Is stickering about quantity or quality for you?
I try to be quality over quantity, but I also try to stay as productive as possible to keep the attention of my awesome fans, friends, and sticker fiends! So I do my best to achieve both, it’s hard to work in huge quantity though, since I only do hand-drawns.
Do you collect and/or trade slaps with other artists?
I do collect and trade with other artists. I also collaborate with them, and that is my favorite way to create art, it pushes my boundaries and makes me experiment with different techniques and tools.
hizzle2Do you have a message that you are trying to convey with your slaps?
The slaps are a message in their own aspect. Street art on government goods. Sometimes my slaps get a little raunchy, and sometimes a little evil. If my art did have a message, I would hope it to be “Be Creative!” I think people who are serious about making art just need to create more and regurgitate less.
What do you want people to take away from seeing one of your designs in the wild?
I just want you to be interested in my art. I want my art to catch your eye. And I want you to enjoy it because I created it.
Final thought:
Thanks for the outlet to expand my fan base a little bit! This social network, stickering/slap community is fun and is producing a lot of respectable, unique art. I’m glad and honored to be a part of it!!!
