MY name is Eva Spain aka Spain
Baja California, Mexicali & La Puente, California
How long have you been making stickers?
Since my freshman year 2009.
What inspired you to first start producing stickers?
I was in a restroom at Jack In The Box and someone had slapped a sticker saying “you for got your phone hu?” I replied the next day (literally) with a slap of a cell phone. I went back to check up on it and people were replying and having conversations, it was legit!
What role would you say stickers play within the greater scope of art?
To me it’s a signature, for fun as well, and it compliments a bunch of dull places. Stickers are random and get people thinking, “How did it get up there?”, “What does that character mean?”, and “I want one.”
I’m from Mexicali, so I make anything stick: regular paper, post stickers, gorilla glue, acrylic paints, markers. I’m not fancy, I work with what I have and that’s when I get creative
What are some of your favorite places to put up slaps?
Restrooms, libraries, fitting rooms, elevators, any high place! I’m located around Los Angeles so it gets challenging
What is the longest one of your slaps has survived in the wild?
When I started, I went to my home town and at the border while crossing by foot, I saw my slap at the main gate.
Have you ever had any run-ins with the law due to your stickering?
No, but I could sense people stare at me while I slap one. I’ve never really thought about getting caught or told something, and if so I come up with something on the spot, then again I don’t grab attention.
What other artists inspire you?
Honestly Retna and Bansky simply, because of how creative they are.
Have you ever had a funny/unusual experience related to stickering?
I slapped one at Costco and an Asian saw it and asked me my name and took a picture of it. I asked him if he was a pig and he said no, “It’s just, you’re a girl and this is cool,” lol it made my day
If you had to guess, how many stickers have you produced to date?
Since 2009 maybe about 3k.
Is stickering about quantity or quality for you?
Honestly, I really don’t care and it doesn’t matter to me. People will still look at it and be amused. Poor or ugly you make it work, there’s a taste for everything.
Do you collect and/or trade slaps with other artists?
No, I don’t do that, I don’t even know artists here in Mexicali or Cali. I usually give away my slaps to people from Texas, Oregon, New York, my stickers get around,
Do you have a message that you are trying to convey with your slaps?
Yes, get creative.
I just want to say I’m not an artist, nor am I pro. I don’t even have a name. I’m from Mexicali and all I want to do is grow in art
What is the best way for people to follow your work? (social media, etc.)
I only have an Instagram @Eva_Spain
