How long have you been making stickers?
I received my first order of custom made stickers in December of 2013
What inspired you to first start producing stickers?
My fascination with stickers goes way back so I will give you the short
form account. I can remember visiting my brother who was attending school at College of Charleston in 2001 and seeing these stickers everywhere about Andre the Giant. I continued to ask my brother what they meant and he would reply “nothing, it’s just a sticker”. I thought that was so cool but I “didn’t get it”. The mystery and artwork of these enigmatic stickers were hypnotizing. These stickers of course were the early works of Shepard Fairy, a Charleston native. Fast forward to December 2012 and I experienced a near-fatal incident which put me in the hospital. I felt different from that day on and especially in those first few months. I would experience what I would call “flashes of inspiration”. These “flashes” were strong and drew me towards art and fashion, hobbies in which I had never really been into before the incident.
gatherIpostWhat role would you say stickers play within the greater scope of art?
I feel that stickers are a relatively fast and inexpensive way for an artist to put there work out there to be viewed by others, to spark conversation. Stickers are a great way to put any kind of message out there though. Stickers get people’s attention. I give out a lot of stickers and no one has ever told me “No, I do not want a sticker” when asked. There are not many things that people always accept with a smile. A sticker can make someone smile and that is an art in and of itself. (more…)

What inspired you to first start producing stickers?
I thought it was a creative way to advertise, but later on I realized it was more of an art form. Designing & creating stickers really caught my attention.

I have always been a fan of graffiti and street art. Especially walking around NYC, you would see stickers on almost every corner in all the Burroughs. When I went to NYC Comic Con this year, I had the opportunity to meet Kosbey and Abe Lincoln JR and we talked about the sticker culture. I also met Camden Noir that put together the book, “Label 228 : A Street Art Project”. A collection of 228’s from various artist from all over the world. Soon after the Comic Convention I wanted to see if I could make a few of my own stickers. I’m still getting the hang of it and experimenting with different mediums. I also get inspired just by finding other stickers out there and looking at what other artist are coming up with. (more…)

abide stickerName: Underestimated Gentleman
Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
How long have you been making stickers? I’ve been doing ABIDE for a year and a half, but have only started doing stickers the last 2 months.
What inspired you to first start producing stickers? I did wheatpasting for quite a while before turning to stickers because of their ease. For wheatpasting there’s so much you have to plan out: the place, time, material, paste making, etc. But with a sticker it’s just so much easier peeling one off and sticking it just about anywhere.
What role do stickers play within the greater scope of art? Stickers are very unique because they are essentially a public medium. Anything bigger like street art or a wheatpaste often has a message to convey to people passing by, but a sticker can simply be an inside joke amongst friends that turns out to look great on a cityscape.
abide stickerMaterials: I chose to make my own stickers because I believe that all retailers are overpricing the costs to make stickers, hell I wouldn’t pay $2 for my own stickers if I can make my own. Basically what I do is I buy a sticker sheet from Staples and a bottle of all purpose glue, print out a couple sticker sheets and glue them to the sticker sheets so that the design is on top and sticky surface on the bottom by spreading (more…)

Artist Profile: Swone

swone stickerName:
Austin, Texas
What inspired you to first start making stickers?
I first was making stencils and painting them on canvas, but one day I was watching some video on stencils and I found the sticker art world and started making stickers.
How long have you been at it?
I’ve been making stickers for about a year and a half now, but Ive been making stencils for longer then that.
What role do you think stickers play within the greater scope of art?
I think that stickers in the street make people see art more and they really might appreciate it more than if they had seen it in a gallery or art fair. People may become more aware of art through stickers and street art.
